A scratching sound inside a wall is unsettling, and it usually means a possum has found its way from the roof into the wall cavity. In many homes, the space between the inside and outside wall linings is open at the upper end, right where it meets the ceiling space. A possum moving around the roof can slip down into that space and sometimes stays there.
